Happy Janmashtami!!
Here’s an instant gojjavalakki mix I fell in love with. This gets ready in less than 20 mins. And with the mix ready, all you need to do is add in hot water. This mix comes in real handy while traveling, or for lunch box in busy mornings, or for just quick breakfast/lunch or dinner.
This is one of my favorite breakfast items. Do try!
Ingredients
Thick Poha - 2 cups
Tamarind - Lemon size
Jaggery - 5-6 tsp
Rasam powder - 3 tsp
Desiccated coconut - 3-4 tbsp(as needed)
Salt
Roast and grind
Urad dal- 1/2 tsp
Chana dal - 1/2 tsp
Black pepper - 1 tsp
Black Sesame seeds - 2 tsp
Tadka
Mustard
Urad dal
Chana dal
Groundnut
Curry leaves
Turmeric
Hing
Oil - preferably Peanut oil
Method
In a deep pan, add “Roast and grind” ingredients and dry roast in low to medium flame till urad dal changes color. Keep it aside in a plate for cooling. Later, dry grind this to a coarse powder. In the same pan, add some oil and tamarind pieces. Roast them in low flame till they become crispy. Keep it aside for cooling(it becomes more crunchy as it cools down). Dry grind this to a coarse powder.
Pulse thick poha to a coarse powder consistency. Be careful not to grind it to a smooth powder consistency. Pulsing 2-3 times is enough.
In the same pan, add 2-3 tbsp oil and make tadka out of ”tadka” ingredients. Off the stove and add powdered poha and desiccated coconut to the pan. Roast it in the residual heat. To this add remaining ingredients(rasam powder, jaggery, tamarind powder, salt). Mix well. Store in an airtight container.
To make gojjavalakki -
Take gojjavalakki mix in a bowl. Add hot boiling water to this, so that avalakki is completely immersed in water. At this point mixture is watery. Set it aside for 15-20 min. Fluff it with a fork. Ready to eat.

Notes -
- You should use thick poha, not the medium kind, as it can become super soggy.
- Test how much water is needed by soaking couple of tsp of mix first, just to get the hang of it.
