Cabbage Dose

Try this very yummy, and popular dose from coastal Karnataka region. This is basically heerekai chatti hittu, with finely chopped cabbage as vegetable instead of ridge gourd. I didn’t know it could be made with cabbage as well. My mom makes it with ridge gourd, spinach and dantina soppu(amaranth leaves). This recipe is from Hebbar’s kitchen [link given below].

This pic was taken when I made it for the very first time, hence the poor color and scarce veggies :). Now the color is lot more better and I am adding lot more cabbage, sometimes a mix of veggies like cabbage, spinach and onion too. But alas! the photographer(aka my husband) is showing a lot of “nakhara” these days to take pictures!

Cabbage Rice

This is a very simple rice bath with simple flavors and can be made in no time. Cabbage is generally not liked by kids. But sneak it in a rice bath, they’ll not mind, hopefully :)

Along with cabbage, I added capsicum and chick peas for extra flavor. Do try!

Vegetable Spring roll

I was planning on making some special Indian sweet or savory snack for Deepavali. Since Deepavali is already here, I’ll go with whatever I have on hand :)

I had tried this recipe sometime back and it turned out to be very tasty. The procedure is fairly easy and although tedious, makes a great appetizer for a dinner party/potluck. Rolling takes a lot of time, and if you have some help in that area, making this is very easy. You can also roll this and freeze before hand, frying just before serving.

Do try!

Happy Deepavali!!

Cabbage Paratha/Rotti

As promised, here is my next entry - Cabbage Paratha(or in my case Cabbage rotti).

My daughter doesn’t like cabbage. But she liked this paratha without even realizing that there is cabbage in it! That’s a testimony in itself :)

Just like Avocado Parathas, the procedure for this paratha is also to mix everything and make, rather than stuff and make(which can get quite tedious, IMO).

Because there is cabbage involved, the dough gets extremely soggy. So there is no need for any additional water. As an extra precaution, do not leave the batter to set after mixing for a long time.

For me, despite taking all the precautions, the dough still turned out to be soggy! Then finally I ended up making them like rottis(procedure given below), instead of rolling them like parathas.

The taste was great! Procedure, fairly easy.

Here’s how to make it -

Kosu Huli/Cabbage Sambar

I only like Kosu in palya, or Chinese dishes... but in a huli, not so much. I think Kosu doesn’t go well with the taste of sambar powder. But my husband LOOOVES it!! I thought he was one of a kind loving this huli, until my cousin Archana told me that she LOVES it too!! Now two people loving this huli is not a mere coincidence :) .. I got curious and found out that she had a different recipe. I tried it and it came out good. This huli, I liked. Believe me, if a kosu huli non-liker like me has liked this huli, then anybody can.

This huli has a strong cinnamon flavor, which I think reduces the pungency of cabbage.
