Avalakki Oggarane - Poha - (No onion)

Generally in Avalakki oggarane one cannot skip onions. Onions is one of the main taste giving ingredients to the dish. But this particular recipe is made without onions, without impacting the taste much. The chef uses a paste of green chilies and coconut, instead of adding them separately, and roasts it nicely, which gives this dish a unique flavor.

Avalakki can be made this way for festivals, also for no rice diets.

Enjoy!

Happy Dussehra!

Ingredient

Avalakki (Poha)- thick(dagad) - 2 cups

Coconut - 1 cup (1/2 cup + 1/2 cup)

Green chili - 5-6

Cilantro

Lemon

Oil - preferably coconut

Turmeric

Tadka

Mustard seeds

Urad dal

Chana dal

peanuts

Curry leaves

Method

Wash and soak avalakki in enough water(as required). In a mixie, grind 1/2 cup coconut and green chili with as little water as needed to a thick chutney consistency.

In a deep pan add oil. Add mustard seeds, when they are almost about to splutter add urad dal, chana dal and peanuts. Roast in medium flame until dals change color and peanuts are well roasted. Add curry leaves. Add remaining coconut and fry for a minute. Add coconut - green chili mixture and sauté till almost oil separates (chef says - it should smell like roasted coconut). Add turmeric, salt, lower the flame and add avalakki and some oil on top and mix well. Off the stove. Add lemon juice. Mix well. Add cilantro. Serve.
