Nuggekayi soppu bassaru/ Drumstick leaves rasam

Bassaru is saaru(rasam) made from strained water after cooking dal. Bassaru is generally made with an accompanying palya/sabzi. In the previous post, I wrote about making palya/sabzi, here I give how to make bassaru.

Enjoy some hot and healthy nugge soppu bassaru - palya with some rice and ghee.

Do try!

Ingredients

Drumstick leaves/Nugge soppu
Toor dal - 1/2 cup

To roast and grind

Red chilies(byaadagi) - 3-4
Methi/fenugreek seeds - 1 tsp
Peppercorns - 1 tsp
Cumin seeds/Jeera - 1 tsp
Garlic - 3-5 big pods
Desiccated coconut - handful
Cilantro
Tamarind paste/Hunse Hannu rasa

For tadka(saved some from previous post)
Jeera
Curry leaves
Red chilies
Shallots - 9-10 (I used regular onion)

Method

In a pot cook toor dal with lots of water(on stove top - toor dal should hold it’s shape). When toor dal is half way done add drumstick leaves. After they are cooked - strain dal-leaf and save the water. Use this strained dal-leaf to make palya/sabzi.

Meanwhile, in a pan dry roast masala one by one (according to original recipe). I roasted them all together, here’s how -
In a pan add little oil, start with dry red chillies, then add add jeera, methi, peppercorns, garlic and roast in low flame. Switch off the stove and add desiccated coconut. Grind this with cilantro and water. Add tamarind paste and grind again to a smooth paste.

In a pan make tadka. Add oil, add jeera, red chilies, curry leaves. Once jeera sizzles add shallots(or onion) and sauté nicely. Keep part of this tadka aside.

Make palya -To the remaining tadka add strained dal-leaf mixture, salt, mix well. Sauté on low flame.

Make bassaru - Take the strained water in a pot. Add ground masala + salt. Boil nicely for about 10 min. Add tadka. Serve hot.

Notes -
  • I found the drumstick leaves to be little under cooked, so I would add dal and leaf together while cooking/ or I may pressure cook just the leaf for 1 whistle.
  • The strained water can be consumed as it is, with some salt - health tip from oggarane dabbi.
  • Probably there was no need to make this into two posts 😁
