Another easy recipe for everyday cooking - Seemebdnekayi(Chow chow) kootu. Seemebadnekayi suits well more in kootus and majjige hulis than sambars. The taste of this kootu is very unique. I just added nuggekayi(drumsticks) along with it. Do try!
Chayote - 1
Nuggekayi - frozen - handful
Moong dal + toor dal
Peas(skipped)
Sambar powder - 1 tsp
Turmeric powder
Salt
Cilantro
To grind
Coconut - 3 tbsp
Dalia/ kadle pappu - 2 tsp
Cumin/ jeera - 1 tsp
Red chili - 1(I added 2 - became spicy)
Tadka
Oil/ghee
Mustard seedsUrad dal
Hing
Curry leaves(I added this while grinding)
Method
Peel and cube chayote. Don’t throw away these peels, you can make chutney with it, which can be found here.
In a pressure cooker add washed and soaked dal combo + chayote pieces + sambar powder + turmeric, and let it whistle for 2-3 whistles. I also added drumsticks(nuggekayi).
Meanwhile grind ‘to grind’ ingredients to chutney consistency. Add this to the cooked stuff in the cooker. Adjust water to get sambar consistency(it will thicken as it boils). Add salt. Make tadka with oil(ghee), mustard seeds, urad dal, curry leaves and lots of hing. Add this to the kootu. Garnish with cilantro. Serve hot with rice and ghee.
