Easy Chakkuli

Ganesha Habba season again! Happy anniversary, blog!! wow, 2 years of blogging!! never thought I would stick this long :)
I thought of making and posting some sweet recipe, but then I saw this easy chakkuli recipe somebody posted for Krishnashtami and wanted to give it a try... desperately!!

My mom makes proper chakkulis, roasting the ingredients and getting them ground properly from a mill and all.. but I neither have the means nor the inclination of doing that anytime.. I am happy sticking to easy shortcuts :).. this is one such easy(compared to traditional) and tasty recipe..

I was keeping my fingers crossed, worrying what if it fails, but thankfully they turned out great - crunchy and very tasty.. Thank you Ganesha!!!

Ingredients

Chiroti Rava - 1 cup (in water measuring cup) - I used upma rava
Water - 2 cups( I needed 1/2 cup extra)

Rice flour - 2 cups (in water measuring cup)
Butter - lemon size (around 2 tbsp)
Cumin - 2 tsp
White sesame seeds - 1-2 tsp
Hing
Chili powder - 1 tsp
Salt

Method

Boil water in a big pot. Add salt. Add rava and bring it to a boil. Let it become like upma. Turn off the stove.

Add all the remaining ingredients. Mix everything to a dough. Add some warm water if necessary. Knead to a soft pliable dough.

Put the dough in chakkuli press, and press them in chakkuli shape.

Heat oil in a frying pan. After it gets really hot, start adding 3-5 chakkalis at a time. Fry on both sides till golden brown. A good way of saying when they are done is to wait for them to sizzle out.. the moment the sizzling stops take them out.

Additional Notes -
  • The blogger had some pretty good tips - If the chakkulis absorb lots of oil add some rice flour. Mine did end up absorbing some oil, so I added additional 2 tsp rice flour
  • Don't press the chakkulis all at once, press them in batches.
  • amma’s tip - chakkalis should never be cramped inside the oil.. there should be enough space for each of them. So put only as much as the oil can take.
  • 3/4 cup of rava yielded around 40 chakkulis
