Tomato Dal

Here’s a restaurant style dal, which my friend actually got from a restaurant chef. Simple dal, tweak a little, and you’ve got an extraordinary tasting, restaurant quality dal. 

Dal is my favorite comfort food. 
Dal + Rice + Ghee + Papad + with the side of pickle = heaven! simply heaven!!

This goes well with plain rice or jeera rice. 
Do try!

Toor dal - 1 cup
Onion - 1 medium
Tomato - 2
Hing - a generous pinch
Ginger - 1” piece
Garlic - 2 chopped(optional)
Green chili - 2 slit
Tomato paste - 1-2 tbsp(secret ingredient)
Garam masala - 1/2 tsp
Cilantro - to garnish

To temper
Mustard seeds

Wash and soak toor dal for at least half an hour.
In a pressure cooker, make tadka. Add onion. Sauté till translucent. Add chopped ginger, garlic(if adding any). Add green chili. Add tomato. Sauté till mushy. Add tomato paste. Add toor dal. Add water, garam masala. Close the lid and cook for 3 whistles. Let it cool. Open the lid. Add water if necessary. Bring it to a boil. Add cilantro and turn off the stove. Alternatively you could add tadka in the end(preferable).
