Vanilla - Chocolate Barfi

Check out these Vanilla-Chocolate Barfis! pretty fancy, eh?

I tried them for the first time and they came out pretty good.

I saw this recipe online in one of my favorite blogs. I followed the recipe verbatim. This blogger always puts step by step recipes with pictures. It’s really hard to mess it up.

These barfis are not only awesome looking, they are awesome tasting too.. and they are pretty easy to make with just a few ingredients.

Enjoy Diwali with these homemade barfis. Happy Deepavali!!

Ingredients

for Vanilla Layer
All purpose flour - 1/2 cup
Ghee - 1/4 cup melted
Sugar - 1 cup
Water - 1/2 cup
Vanilla Essence - 1/2 tsp

for Chocolate Layer
All purpose flour - 1/2 cup
Ghee - 1/4 cup melted
Sugar - 1 cup
Water - 1/2 cup
Cocoa powder - 1 tblsp mixed in 1 tblsp water

Method

Grease a plate with ghee. Set it aside.

Take ghee in a pan. Add all purpose flour. Fry in medium flame for couple of minutes, till the rawness of the flour is gone.

Make sugar syrup(sakkare paaka). Heat water and sugar in a pot. Mix well. Let it boil for couple minutes.

Then take some in a spoon. With the tip of your two fingers, see if you are getting a single thread. If not, let it boil some more and then check again. Once you get single thread consistency, turn off the stove.

Now add the roasted all purpose flour.  Do not turn on the stove. Keep mixing. The mixture will thicken and start leaving the sides. Yes, you read it right. All this happens with the stove off. Add vanilla essence and mix it.

Now spread this on the ‘ghee’d plate and flatten it.

Repeat the same with the chocolate layer. Instead of vanilla essence add cocoa mixture. This is how it looks after it thickens.

Spread it on top of the vanilla layer. Let it cool a bit.
Cut them in cubes.

Let it cool some more till the barfi hardens a little bit. Enjoy!

Notes -
  • Don’t give too much time to make chocolate barfi. Make it immediately after Vanilla layer and add it.
  • Use a square plate/pan to cut the barfis. Circular pan gave oddly shaped pieces along the edge.
  • 1/4 cup all purpose flour each(1/4 for vanilla, 1/4 for chocolate) made around 18 medium sized barfis
